Thor and MORE!

Got to see Thor on a Friday group outing.

My thoughts? A well done effort by everyone involved. This movie was a huge risk on Marvel’s part.

Up until now most of Marvel’s movie adaptations, despite showcasing certain more fantastical elements, have been pretty grounded in reality. But in order to truly have a Marvel Shared Universe and usher forth an Avengers team for the Big Screen, they needed to tell the story of Thor Odinson. This includes Asgard, Norse Gods, the hammer Mjölnir and all the other over the top comic goodness in between. Plus, Marvel’s version of Thor is no household name and its lead (despite the impressive supporting cast around him) is at this point only known as James T. Kirk’s dad who died in the opening sequence of the revamped STAR TREK film.

Now as a comic and sci-fi fan, I would have been more accepting than most even if the movie wasn’t that good. But my main concern, as it is the same for June’s Green Lantern, was how the mainstream crowd would take a movie that touches on the more sci-fi/comic book aspects of the Marvel pantheon? Turns out that my fears were misplaced. Thor topped the box-office this weekend with $66 million, bringing its global cume to about $242 million.

Its a great thing to see, as not only was Thor an important asp4ect of the forthcoming Avengers film, but it also presents a great sign for other less reality-based comic films in development.

With that being said, I read this article on the CBR.com page talking about how the end of Stargate Universe was bad for SyFy. One of its reasons being that with SGU gone, that means there are currently no space opera series on the channel at this moment until BSG: Blood & Chrome airs. Right now, aside from Eureka and Warehouse 13, all we have are fantasy shows (Haven, Being Human), syndicated shows and reality shows (Ghost Hunters, Ghost Hunters and MORE Ghost Hunters).

My suggestion? Maybe its time to see quality space operas take their properties elsewhere. It has been proven that SyFy is no longer the place for true sci-fi shows, especially space operas. So why not go to an AMC or TNT (Falling Skies anyone?). That way, we might not only see better production quality but also maybe shows that walk a finer line between comedy and drama (SyFy shows are can never find that balance). Who knows? I’m just saying.
