Hunger Games and Shame

Wow. Been a while since my last post. I wanted to make sure I had something to actually talk about, which I now do! Anyhow, just finished the book ‘The Hunger Games’. After hearing so much crap about it and the upcoming movie adaptation, I wanted to give the first book in the trilogy a shot to see if it lived up to the enormous hype. And believe me, it did.

First off, Suzanne Collins is a wonderful writer. She really got inside the head of Katniss Everdeen and her day-to-day struggles providing for her family. Also, her fears, insecurities and being in love with two guys but not really knowing it were laid bare for the reader to view. The way Collins described the scenery and the characters in the Hunger Games really brought the world of Panem alive for me. Can’t wait to read the next two books.

Before that, I had finished a Clash of Kings, the second book in the ‘A Song of Fire and Ice’ series. That was also great, but I kind of needed a break from those epic fantasy books because at times they can be a bit depressing despite their enthralling quality.

As for my own writing, I’m now two chapters away from finishing my novella story. Can’t wait. Its been a fun exercise, one that’s taken a bit longer than planned but still fun. And by the looks of things it should be under 45,000 words. Ha! I am looking forward to getting back into the Star Brigade universe in terms of editing the second novel and getting a start on the third book.

In other news, I’ve been asked to write a short for a transhumanism month magazine. Not as familiar with that sub-genre of science fiction, but I’m eager to try my hand in it. I’ll have more updates once I’ve finished the rough draft of the novella and the short story.

And lastly, I saw the film ‘Shame’ a few days ago, which details the story of a sex addict. The movie itself was pretty good, but the performances by Carey Mulligan and Michael Fassbender were phenomenal! The sex and Fassbender’s character’s ways of feeding his addiction are very graphic. There was this scene in the begin of the movie where he screwed a woman from across the subway train with just his eyes! Crazy. In short, see it when it opens wide this week. Til next time.
