True Blood came back last Sunday! Was the Season 4 premiere any good?
Yes and no.
Yes, because things jumped forward one year and a lot of things shifted for our favorite residents of Bon Temps. The show actually needed this, given how damn compressed the True Blood timeline has been for the past three seasons. Sookie found out that Fairyland is really Joshua Tree when you strip away all that airy-fairy glowing shit! Vampries are still doing damage control over Russell Edgington’s craziness. Bill’s now King of Louisiana(!) Jessica and Hoyt are having relationship problems after she starts getting the jones for other people’s blood. Jason’s actually being responsible…and smart! Sam’s meeting regularly with other Shifters. Tara is now a cage-fighting lesbian who goes by Toni–Antonia if you’re nasty. Okay the ‘Antonia’ part was made up 🙂
Now for what didn’t work. Mainly, the premiere was just slow for me. But I get why. Since the show jumped forward by a year, a lot of the episode was spent reestablishing the who, what and where. Also, I did see the second episode thanks to HBOGo, which will start explaining more of the how and why. All in all, I liked the Season 4 premiere and will enjoy seeing more of what took place while Sookie was in Fairyland for a quick minute.
Also I got to see the Falling Skies premiere. That show had way too full of ‘meh’, though it got a bit better toward the end. A lot of the emotional happenings just felt too cliched and dull. I’m giving this show a few more episodes to see if it improves. Real sad to not see any really good sci-fi on American TV other than Fringe. Which gave me an awesome idea. What if someone combined sci-fi with the Spanish telenovela concept? I know, right? EPIC!
And lastly, I have a quick update on the editing of Star Brigade: First Renaissance. I’m beginning to make some headway. The first task was rewriting the first book chapter, which really didn’t work after giving it another read. I’m much happier with this new iteration.
After that, I’m planning mainly to just lean the book out and shed off a lot of excess fat. The goal is to lose about 30-40k in word count before handing it off to another editor who will look at some structural areas in the plot to strengthen. So far, I’ve shaved off just under 2,000 words and would like to get this done by early to mid-August at the latest. Winning! Sorry.
Again, will keep you all updated as my next crack at self-publishing continues!
