This Sunday, True Blood returns. Can’t. WAIT. This is a show that I initially wrote off after 1.5 episodes in Season 1. But after I kept hearing everywhere how insane this show is, I gave it another chance and started watching again in Season 2. Haven’t looked back since.
Now as much as I love this show with all its ridiculousness, sex, gore, hot vampires and deaths, I know I’m not the only one who had a slightly bad after taste once Season 3 ended. So much so that I wasn’t that busted up being over after the finale.
The season had such great build up and potential to be extraordinary, highlighted by the head-twisting hate sex everyone was talking about in Episode 3.03 and capped off by Russell Edgington’s EPIC TV Speech in Episode 3.09. Watch them both again in all their gruesome amazingness if you like. You know you want to. I’ll wait.

But after those series highs, the storylines kinda fizzled. It didn’t help that two of the lead characters (Sookie & Bill) had become thoroughly unlikable and many of the popular supporting characters were stuck in redundant (Tara) or pointless (Jason) story arcs. Not only that, the introduction of werewolves into the TB-verse really disappointed other than the character of Alcide (now a regular for Season 4). Here’s hoping that True Blood’s fourth season will be more buttoned up yet just as entertaining. So I did a quick breakdown about what is known thus far regarding the main storylines for the characters in this season. WARNING. Spoilers below:
Sookie Stackhouse
From variety of spoilers and the 8 minute preview of the Season 4 premiere, Sookie’s few minutes in the Fairy Kingdom was actually about a full year in the real world. So she comes back to a post-Edgington where vampires are doing anything and everything to regain the public’s trust. And it seems that everyone has moved on in her absence.
Thankfully she and Bill are staying broken up for now. Which means Sookie and Eric will be getting closer (much to Team Eric’s delight). And there’s still Alcide waiting in the wings. But lets hope that Sookie gets more to do this season than act like an idiot or choose between her many men.
Bill Compton
Seems like Bill will survive his encounter with Queen Sophie Anne and gain a lofty position in the vamp hierarchy in Sookie’s absence. With him and Sookie broken up, what will Bill do other than get verbally smacked down by Nan Flannigan, Pam and Eric (pre-amnesia)? Wait, I could watch that for a whole season. Ha!
Eric Northman
As mentioned in many articles and interviews, Eric gets witch-induced amnesia this season. And of course Sookie takes care of him. This of course will lead to them becoming closer and definitely romantic. Anything is better than Sookie and Bill sucking up oxygen together. Ugh.
Witches
It seems that the supernatural element being introduced this season will be witches. While I had my issues with the weak-sauce werewolf storyline in Season 3, the witch introduction promises to be actually cool. Why, you ask?
1.) It involves Lafayette and Jesus joining a new coven in town
2.) the witches are the cause of Eric’s amnesia and…
3.) these witches are necromancers, which means they are a legitimate threat to vampires.
Jason Stackhouse
Last we saw Jason Stackhouse, he was stuck in TWO boring-ass storylines. One dealing with a V-addicted high school quarterback which went nowhere. The other dealt with inbred were-panthers, one in particular named Crystal who Jason fell hard for. Why, I still have no clue. Crystal’s were-panther community of double cousins and sister aunts had been raided by the FBI in the Season 3 finale. Last we saw Jason he had become the protector/de-facto leader of this group. This storyline, while slightly better than the V-Addict QB, still bored the tears out of me and most. So lets hope this gets better and gives an actor as talented as Ryan Kwanten better material to chew on.
Tara Thorton
One of the biggest complaints about Tara was how victimized she had been for two straight Seasons (Maryann in Season 2, Frankin Mott in Season 3). To the point that all we ever saw Tara doing was screaming or crying with a quivering lip. From the Season 4 promos it looks like Tara is being allowed to toughen up and actually fight back. Too bad she still has that dreadful accent.
Also, I hear that we haven’t seen the last of Alcide’s crazy ex Debbie Pelt, which is awesome, so that gives Alcide something to do other than fawn and howl after Sookie.
I’ll be watching True Blood on Sunday. Will you? I’ll give my thoughts on the Season 4 premiere early next week.
