From Utah, Day 1 and 2

Yes, I know. I did it again. August has been one of those ridiculous months, but that is no excuse to not post at all. My fault again.

I’ve been churning out a few more shorts, predominantly Star Brigade. Its fun to really explore moments in these characters’ arcs that helped define who they are. More to come in that regards. But I am also working in parallel on my other book series in development.

But the main thing that will happen in September is my one last major edit to the first Star Brigade book. I’ll finally start on that and get it done before formally beginning work on the third Star Brigade book.

Right now, however, I’m in Utah on vacation. First day was in Salt Lake City exploring the city and its famed center, Temple Square. I did get a lot of stares. However, people were very friendly. I even got two young missionaries who gave me a guided tour of quite a few sites around Temple Square. Made the tour a bit more fun.

After that, I took a brief trip to the Great Salt Lake in Syracuse, Utah. HA! That was actually fun, and explained the faint smell of salt water ubiquitous around the city. Wish I had had more time to explore Antelope Island, the largest of the islands in the Great Salt Lake.

Today, I made my way to Zion National Park in southern Utah. NICE. Reminded me a lot of Sedona, AZ (which is a good. thing.) I did two relatively easy hikes in the morning to Weeping Rock and Emerald Pools.

Then in the afternoon, I unwisely took up the challenge of a fellow hiker and tried Angel’s Landing. WOW. That was a test, both mental and physical. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone afraid of heights or just out of shape.

One of the crazy cool things about the hike was how friendly most people were coming back down as I was ascending, like a shared kinship of sorts between those insane enough to try it. Took me about an hour and half, the last mile and a half being the most challenging. But in the end, I got to see this:

Totally worth it. Though I’m very much going to feel all of it tomorrow when I head back to Zion for my Narrows hike.
