Supporting Cast

Nothing relieves stress like playing video games for 5 hours straight. Wow.
Plus I finally got to play Marvel vs Capcom 3 and Super Street Fighter 4. Amazingness. Its settled. I’m buying a damn XBox. Eventually. Anyway…

As I’m starting to pack for my big Eurotrip, I came across this great writing article about special characters that are extremely key not just to supporting the main character but also giving a verve to a story as a whole.

You can read it here.

Examples they included where the murder victim from the novel The Black Dahlia. All in all, they brought up a great point. Special characters don’t even have to be alive, but how they affect the main characters, whether it be love or obsession or even hate, they give that main character a texture and a realism that cannot occur independently.

Lead characters need to have that person or people who shape their story arc, and who resonate a chord with the audience. Why else did people love the character of Blaine when he first showed up in Kurt’s life on Glee? Or Sirius Black when he became a fixture in the Harry Potter-verse? I’ll probably check this book out as I continue to hone my craft. A writer can never stop learning new ways to better their tales.
