Chuck.
NBC’s little show that could. It started about 4 years ago and despite not so great ratings, it has lasted far longer than expected. Its premise is simple, an everyday geek who accidentally uploads a massive database into his brain and is now fighting criminals all over the world with the CIA.
And at the emotional crux of this was the ‘Will-They, Won’t-They’ relationship of the titular character and his sexy CIA handler Sarah Walker. The two finally got together in Season 3, which was when Chuck started to suck.
Now by no means am I inferring that the show itself has begun to suck because of the relationship between Chuck and Sarah. The show began to suck because of how the relationship changed Chuck.
I’d started to notice it a bit in Season 3. But it really reached out and slapped my noggin in Season 4. Chuck as a character now has no hobbies, no interests no activities outside of being a spy that reach beyond Sarah. She has become his life, his world, the sun that he orbits. All he talks about are ways to please Sarah or what he can do to worship her that much more. On missions, he has an amazing ability to find the most inopportune times to talk about his feelings for her.
And any time they have a fight, Chuck is always the first one to apologizes about being such an idiot and for ever disagreeing with Sarah. Its annoying and a complete disservice to what was once a fun and slightly neurotic character.
By no means will I stop watching…yet. However, I feel that the character needs more to do that involve…I don’t…himself maybe! When Chuck talks with Morgan, let it be about other things or funny riffs on pop culture. Bring back the part of Chuck’s personality that did not make him completely whipped and subjugated to the Altar of Sarah Walker.
