This issue really bugs me.
So WikiLeaks outs a bunch of secret documents detailing the US’s foreign policy (including observations, potential plans and conversations).
While a lot of it is actually fascinating to read as a civilian, my question is what does it accomplish?
What is to be gained by leaking this information? Who is this helping? Shocking or not, the US is allowed to have these candid and sometimes cynical views of other countries and how they run things behind closed doors. As a friend of mine said, this is pretty much tattletale-ism dressed up as journalism. and it will only create more chaos.
More to the point, I really hope they do prosecute the WikiLeaks people. First off, what they did was illegal as many of these documents were not for public consumption. Secondly, their bald stupidity disguised as ‘pursuing the truth’ really does place countless American lives abroad at risk. People who could face serious blowback if one of the countries detailed in the leaked docs takes violent umbrage to what was said about them.
All for what, I ask again? What does this accomplish for anyone?
