Super 8 and Self-Publishing

Saw Super 8 yesterday. It was fun. Really enjoyed all the performances, especially by the kids. It clearly was an homage to 80s movies like Goonies and any alien flick Spielberg directed.

The alien monster was a tad disappointing. Looking oddly close to the Cloverfield monster, and for a brief bit I actually thought it was the same one.

Also, during my staycation before starting the new gig, I had lunch with a friend a few days back, and it happened to be one of the best work-lunches I’ve ever had.

We got to the topic of my novels, and he brought up not only a good cover artist I can possibly use, but also a new format that would help me reach readers much quicker in this digital age.

He forwarded me an article about this fantasy/paranormal YA writer who became extremely successful by self-publishing her novels as e-books. You can read the full story here.

So here I was, trying to go the traditional route yet again with no guarantee that I’d even get literary agency representation, let alone a publishing deal. Also, given that I would be an unknown author, there would be so many concessions I’d have to make on my work with editors, cover artists, logo designers, etc.

Now, as many know, I self-published my first novel back in 2005/2006. The problem with the way I chose to do so (print-on-demand) is extremely expensive and was a big turn off to potential readers. But by going a more pure self-publishing route and pushing primarily the e-book version (which I could price at less than $3) many potential readers would have little issue checking out my work.

Also, the cover art for my first novel left a lot to be desired. But at the time, it was what i could afford. This time, I’m going a different path. Either way, I’m truly excited about putting my work out there again. Can’t wait to get this project in motion. Will give details as more things fall into place!
