Oscars 2011

Another year, another Oscars show.

Saw bits and pieces. Some stuff was surprising (David Fincher not winning Best Director for The Social Network). And Sandra Bullock’s charming intro for each of the Best Actor Nominees. But the Oscars for this year was mostly a big ball of  ‘Meh.’

From what I saw, a huge deal of that came from James Franco, one of the Oscar co-hosts. He just could not be bothered to give a shit, and it showed.  That just bugged me beyond belief actually, and only highlighted why I’m not such a fan of his. At least Anne Hathaway tried. James Franco just seems to be 5 miles up his own ass over the awesomeness of being James Franco, looking mildy annoyed the whole time. Whatever.

Also, the problem is that there are so many damn awards shows before the Oscars that most of the winners are pretty much pre-determined. Between the Golden Globes, the SAG Awards, the Spirit Awards, the BAFTAs, the PGAs, the DGAs, its exhausting. Everyone near Natalie Portman, Colin Firth (who’s speech was awesome), Christian Bale and Melissa Leo were going to win. Plus, most of the awesomely funny speeches were already done at the Golden Globes.

The only really interesting shift was how everyone assumed that The Social Network would dominate at the Oscars based on how it swept the Golden Globes. But midway through all those hundreds of awards shows, The Kings Speech came out and snatched away TSN’s momentum. Craziness.

But again, The Oscars show itself was just ‘there.’ Oh well, at least for the first time in two years I got to watch the Oscars as a viewer and not as an ABC employee. That was cool.
