September is a huge month for DC Comics. After using Justice League #1 as a kick-off, DC will finally be launching their much-discussed New 52 linewide revamp. Sure it will cause a temporary spike in comic sales for DC, but will it give them the long-term moment that they so desperately crave?
Who knows? I’m no expert. I’m just a comic book fan. I gave JL #1 a read, and thus far I was interested. It seems that the starting point for JL is a few years in the past when all these A-list characters just met. The Post-Flashpoint DC Universe is a much different place than the Post-Crisis one. Heroes and villains alike a feared by the general public. Especially Superman.
We don’t get a full look at the team in this issue. There’s the first meeting fo Batman and Green Lantern as well as a side story of Cyborg pre-cybernetic enhancements. Plus, the creature Batman and Green Lantern are hunting is the minion of a certain DC supervillain we all know and love to hate. We only get a few mentions of Superman before his big cameo at the end of the iassue, which will lead to his ‘first’ throwdown with the Dark Knight.
Overall it was good setup. I liked the banter between GL and Batman. It was funny because the last time artist Jim Lee drew a GL/Batman interaction was in the All-star Batman & Robin series. This Batman is not the psychotic/raging Clint Eastwood-wannabe written by Frank Miller. But his condescending way of dealing with GL’s arroganmce was entertaining. I’ll be back for Issue #2.
Quick update on the writing. Just about done with my revisions of the first Star Brigade book. Soon it will be off to a friend who will give some final updates before I start my journey into the self-publishing ebook world. Exciting! More updates when they become available.
