Cool thing happened. Was browsing through someone’s Facebook pictures and came up with a new novella idea. This concept came from a much less…what’s the word…base foundation than the first novella concept that came to me last year.
What was my idea from last year? Well, it was a romance dealing with the 30-year crisis. You know, the one that comes after the quarter-life crisis?
Details are still under wraps for now. But most importantly, coming up with this novella solidified my belief that I could craft tales beyond not just the Star Brigade series, but also science fiction stories.
I was on vacation in Arequipa, Peru last year with a friend, and on our second night or so we were figuring out what the night would have in store for us young American bucks. Meanwhile, two hotel patrons next door were having a loud in-door party of their own. My and my friend were both more amused than mortified. It got even funnier the next day when I saw their door slightly ajar, which tipped me off that one or both were hotel employees. Ha!
Anyway, about a week later, we were now in the Peruvian part of the Amazon Rain Forest. My friend brought up that hotel situation and we both laughed. But then, an idea came out of this incident. Soon, it blossomed into a few characters and the beginnings of a plot. In less than two days, I had a rough outline/synopsis in my head that was writing itself at scary speed. I couldn’t wait to write it all down somewhere, as the Amazon lodge we were at had no accessible computers.
As soon as we reached Lima , I hijacked the nearest hotel lobby PC and pour out the outline and character description into the portable flash drive I brought with me (LOVE those things!). But the best thing about this idea, again was that it had not aliens, no spaceships, no new worlds. It was set completely in the real world. A first for me.
And as much as I adore the genre of science fiction, I hope that this next novella is just the second of many more non-SF ideas to come.
