Damn it, Spring 2012 can’t get here soon enough! What a great season of television Game of Thrones provided us all.
Now while the Season 1 finale was lighter on action that the past few episodes, it perfectly set up Season 2. Robb is now crowned ‘King of the North’, Jaime is the captive of the Starks, Sansa is the captive of King Joffrey and hoping to the gods that she doesn’t get her period EVER. Arya escaped King’s Landing disguised as a boy. Dany has three baby frakking DRAGONS. What has been great about this show was it started off with a slow build, letting us get to know the characters before ramping up the action and then the fantasy elements.
All in all, glad I stuck around in spite of the slower start. Can’t wait to see what Season 2 (based off the ‘A Game Of Thrones’ sequel novel A Clash of Kings) has to offer!
Also got to see Green Lantern last week. I couldn’t fully avoid the reviews, which were mostly bad. My thoughts? Meh. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t particularly great either. Ryan Reynolds was very good with what he was given. I was very skeptical when he was first announced as Hal Jordan (I always felt he’d be a better Flash should that movie ever see the light of day). But he proved me wrong. Also, Mark Strong was pitch perfect as Hal’s future nemesis Sinestro. Too bad he didn’t get enough screen time.
However, it felt as if the movie was a mishmash of every other superhero/jackass-manboy-becomes-a-hero origin story we’ve seen over the past decade. The daddy issues felt tacked on and the CGI was way too much. Plus, Hal’s training and intro to the Green Lantern Corps were way too rushed. Along with that, as much as I love mythos and world building, even I felt there was a bit of an overload.
And while I never could accuse Blake Lively of delivering Oscar-worthy performances, I felt the heap of bad press her acting received was unfair. Maybe that’s becaue I’ve watched Gossip Girl enough (don’t judge!) to know that she is fairly limited as an actress and definitely miscast as Carol Ferris. She did as well as I expected her to do, which was mediocre. However, I’ve seen worse performances, like January Jones in X-Men: First Class. Ugh. Anywho…
On to other topics, I finally started editing the first Star Brigade novel. My first target of the rewrite is removing/reintegrating two chapters that were universally disliked by most fans. But I got a plan to make it work better for fans and the story as a whole. Want to know it is?
HA! You got to pick up the new edition when it comes out. Can’t wait to release the new and improved version along with a brand-new cover! More details to come. Till then, see ya when I see ya.
