Didn’t watch the Primetime Emmy Awards, but hearing that Friday Night Lights finally got the Emmy attention it has so deserved for the past five years was so sweet to hear. FNL was one of my favorite shows and it made might night to have it get a great send off after its series finale. Congrats to Jason Katims and Kyle Chandler for their wins.
Anyhow, I mostly finished my latest revision of the first Star Brigade novel. The biggest point of this revision was to shave off as much fat as I could. I was initially going to do this to potentially get my novel ready for a literary agent and a traditional publisher. But even after I decided to give self-publishing another shot, I still wanted to shorten the manuscript. I love that story, but it was a bit long for a first-time novel, as I’d heard from many friends and readers. Plus, there were several elements I wanted to update so that it aligned closer to my latest Star Brigade novel.
Going through it, the story still stands firm in my eyes. But there were many word choices and structures that even made me think ‘WTF?’. But I’m much happier with it now. I shed lots of dead weight without compromising the story. In fact certain changes in a few subplot elements will make it an even better read the second time around.
Now, along with writing my latest non-science fiction story, I’ll be reviewing the edits of my second novel. So far my editor (3D Writing Services) is doing a good job. Some edits make perfect sense. But there are others that won’t work within the framework of the story. But that’s the great thing about editing and having another person review your wok. It not only gives you another’s perspective on your writing, it challenges your work in terms of quality and content.
I’ll have another update once I dive deeper into my new story, which I’ll be fully committed to as of tomorrow. Til next time!
