The End of What?

Hmmm. Guess them Mayan aren’t as accurate as they liked to believe, no? Oh well. Moving on.

Saw The first Hobbit film last week? On the much anticipated IMAX 3D. My honest assessment?

It was entertaining for sure. The world-building was exquisite as expected from Peter Jackson. However….I’ll need to re-watch the first third of the film as I fell asleep. NOT because The Hobbit was boring or anything. I was operating on less than four hours of sleep that day and it finally hit me when the movie began. I also had a few more gripes. Apparently the IMAX theater I saw it at was NOT carrying the 9 minutes of Star Trek 2 goodness. I was less than thrilled about that. As for the 48 fps, I could have done without it. A lot of times, the super clearness of what I saw onscreen looked very fake and made the CGI was beyond obvious. So I could seriously do without 48 fps.

Bilbo!

So I’m finishing out the year doing the final edits for my revised first Star Brigade novel, as well as working on another Star Brigade short. I’m aiming to finish two more SB shorts by the end of 2012 and already have one completed. One of the things that are helping with character development are when you strip away all the character accouterments and start with the basics. What drives/motivates a character? What do they want?

I’ve more or less known this, but I read this specifically in a review for an episode of the show Homeland. They stripped away all the other drama and emotions and got to the basics of what a few characters wanted, and it really struck a chord with me. Its something that I’m going to implement in many of my characters currently and in future writing. I’m already seeing how it is helping me in my shorts. Anyway, off to do more writing and movie watching. Expected a post or two closer to year’s end.
